Things to Consider when you Revise
Revision is one of the pleasantest parts of the writing process if you follow a few suggestions:
Take some time off (time: the student’s enemy; the reviser’s friend):
Put your draft aside for a while; get some intellectual distance from it.
Allow your subconscious to work on it.
Re-read: take a quick look at your primary and secondary sources and also your notes.
Re-read your draft: assess it with a cool and critical eye; the time you’ve spent away from it will allow you to see it as a reader sees it.
Outline: make a quick outline and inventory each paragraph:
Is each paragraph unified? tied to your main claim?
Does each advance your argument?
Do they follow one another in a logical progression?
Are the transitions between them clear and helpful?
Again, try to see your paragraphs and their organization as a reader would. Do they make sense?

Reconsider goals, both global and specific:
What is the goal of the entire essay (to interpret? to locate causes? to evaluate? to provoke to action?)?
How do you accomplish this?
What is the goal of individual paragraphs and sentences (to support your thesis); how do they work?
Reconsider your use of sources: Remember that these must function as evidence to help you support your thesis. For this reason you need to
Tell us how to read them: don’t imagine that they can stand on their own or that they are self-evident. Be sure that they are
Properly introduced and
Adequately explained. Spend at least as much time explaining quotes as you do quoting them, and be sure their connection to your thesis is articulated explicitly.
Reconsider also:
Substance: have you fairly, fully, and efficiently presented all relevant arguments and made interpretations that ask significant questions? On your re-reading did you notice things about your sources that you didn’t pick up before? Do you need to change your approach to reflect this deeper knowledge?

Organization: have you chosen a scheme appropriate to your goals; can you recognize your scheme; how might you fine-tune it; how are your transitions; do they answer readers’ questions about why certain info is present?

Style: appropriate tone; direct constructions; active, strong verbs? Avoid give, have, be, do.

Mechanics: do you detect any distracting patterns of error? Consult the handbook.
