Contract law

Meredith’s grandpa promises Meredith that he will pay her $10,000.00 upon graduation from high school if she uses no tobacco products until she turns 18 AND if she works a part-time job during her senior year of high school. Meredith agrees and applies for a job at Games on the Go. Meredith, 17 at the time, and prior to starting senior year, signs a contract to work for Games on the Go and in the contract she agrees to work for a minimum of two years and if she fails to work for that period of time she will be responsible for reimbursement to the company for expenses incurred for Meredith’s six week training program and she will be responsible to pay an early termination penalty fee. Meredith regularly works the part-time job throughout her senior year. On her graduation day Meredith turns 18. The following day she smokes a cigarette for the first time, and she demands payment from her grandpa in the amount of $10,000. She also calls Games on the Go and quits her job. Grandpa refuses to pay Meredith, stating there was never a valid contract. Games on the Go tells Meredith she cannot quit and reminds her that if she does then she will owe money to the store. Discuss whether a valid contract exists between Meredith and her grandpa and whether a valid contract exists between Meredith and Games on the Go. Will her grandpa be required to pay the $10,000? Will Meredith be required to pay anything to Games on the Go? Fully discuss all elements of each potential contract and any potential other issues presented herein.
