Week 3 Assignment – Essay 2 Prewriting
Read the following poems before starting:
Gregory Corso – “Marriage” (Week 3 Assigned Readings Folder)
Professor’s Notes (Week 3 Lecture Folder)
Thesis Statements Handout (Week 3 Lecture Folder)
1) Write an informal response of at minimum 7 sentences to the story of your choice. This can simply be your personal reaction to the story, or you can consider the following questions:
Did you like/dislike the poems? Why?
What was confusing or puzzling? What specific lines stood out?
Did you notice any poetic techniques such as rhyme or alliteration?
What message do you think the author was trying to send?
2) Write a working thesis for the first essay. This can change later on. Remember that a thesis must contain an argument about the work of some kind. There are sample thesis statements located in the lecture notes for each story.
Example Working Thesis:
Plath seeks to attack and disturb her readers in “Daddy” and “Lady
Lazarus” through her use of sound, imagery, and confession. I will provide feedback on how you can improve your thesis statement before moving forward with the essay.
