I am a law student and literature papers are not my wheelhouse. This is a Topic I selected from a class where we studied 5 Shakespeare plays during a Law and Literature class. This assigned paper is only over the literature aspect and has no relationship to the Law. We discussed: Julius Caesar, King Richard II, Henry V, Measure for Measure, and the Merchant of Venice. Only the relationships within these 5 plays should be discussed. The page requirement is 20 pages double spaced.
Below is the paper topic description I sent to the professor:
In my paper I plan to analyze the same-sex relationships within each of the plays we have studied. Shakespeare’s plays often contain same-sex relationships (usually men) that go beyond what one might consider ordinary friendship. Was this a platonic brotherly love or something more romantic? In a period where wives were more like property than companions and one of the primary goals of any marriage was to consummate a child, there would be little room for a same-sex couple to engage in a monogamous, public relationship like we find today. However, that does not mean that homosexuals did not exist during this time, they simply had different priorities. In my paper, I will identify couples within the plays we have read, discuss my theory of the type of relationship they may have had, and highlight portions of the play that provide evidence of my assertions. Finally, I will compare how different the play’s readings might have come across if we were to assume that certain characters within the plot were part of a romantic relationship instead of merely platonic. If space allows, I may also draw on other literary works that have similar same-sex relationships that could have been homosexual in nature, such as David and Jonathan in the Bible.
