Pay attention to the following:
Do not use 1st person or 2nd person when writing a formal essay. These points of view are permissible in a journal or informal essay. 1st person pronouns: I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, ours. 2nd person pronouns: you, your, yours. Also, avoid the use of one and the reader. You are proving a point you do not need to place your opinion nor yourself in the actual text.
Use accurate transitions. Avoid overuse of “Next, Secondly, Thirdly, Finally.”
Remember, this is a formal essay do not use abbreviations, slang, contractions, or profanity (unless it is in a direct quote and essential to the point you are trying to present). Abbreviations: b/t, w/, w/out, & Contractions: don’t, can’t, ain’t, won’t , isn’t
Do not randomly select quotes. The quotes must be significant to the point of your essay. Remember, no less than SIX quotes. That is about two quotes per body paragraph. You should have at least one long quote. Remember to indent the long quote once or 1/2 inch.
Avoid clichés, example: pretty as a picture, cute as a button, busy as a bee. Clichés are basically overused phrases. They do not contribute to your essay.
Write in the present tense only.
Do not use double negatives. Example: She does not have nothing in her purse.
Watch out for fragments and run-on sentences. These are major point deductions.
Limit your “be” verbs. Try not to use more than 3 per paragraph. Use action verbs.
Avoid the passive voice. Use the active voice. For example, Passive Voice: John Proctor is accused of being a witch by Mary Warren. Active Voice: Mary Warren accuses John Proctor of being a witch.
