– Your thoughts on virtual lectures. I was intentional in providing written comments on each chapter in lieu of videos this summer, primarily because the written word is far easier to reference when studying for exams. I am sure some of you have experience with video lectures in other classes. My thought has been that if I developed them (or worse yet, went with a synchronous format), that would then burden the students to have to watch them, take effective notes and be responsible for the content therein. I want your personal input and perspective on whether video lectures based on the announcements for this course. Would video lectures help, or just be more content you have to absorb (and be tested on). And, know that listing only certain concepts for videos may be impractical, but I will accept that feedback. If you suggest videos, please tell me the concept(s) that would be most helpful to you based on your experience in the class. – Your thoughts on the assignments in this course. Are the MindTap worksheets helpful in forcing you to read the material, or just a waste of time? Are the case analysis problems on MindTap helpful in applying the knowledge of the chapter, or not? Are the discussion forums helpful in interacting with your peers, or just a “repeat what I already heard” fest? To be clear, I don’t want to know your views on these items as much as WHY you feel that way. I want CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, so don’t tell me “this part of the class sucks,” without giving some clear direction on how you would want it changed. – Your thoughts on the exams and diagnostics. Are the diagnostics helpful in studying for the exam, or just more busy-work? Are the Review Questions useful in studying for the exam (in conjunction w/ the course “Feedback Announcements” or nah? Are the exams a fair representation of what you should expect to know from the course material? What, if anything, would you change? Are the weights of the exams (MT #1 and #2 – 100pts; Final – 300 pts) the right mix? How does having a comprehensive (cumulative) final help or hurt you as a student? To be clear, I don’t want to know your views on these items as much as WHY you feel that way. I want CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, so don’t tell me “this part of the class sucks,” without giving some clear direction on how you would want it changed. Is 50% of the course for exams too much? – Your thoughts on the group project. How might the group experience be better? Should it be worth more points (currently 12% of the course) or less? While I cannot allow students to form their own groups (as I try to make sure each group has roughly equal talent – based on cumulative GPAs), what other suggestions might you make? What about the timing of these papers — I have tried to avoid putting too much work in any one week. Is that helpful or harmful to you as a student? And to be clear, I’m still very tied to group projects, even in a virtual environment. In fact, the world has shown us virtual teams are now a thing. To be clear, I don’t want to know your views on these items as much as WHY you feel that way. I want CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, so don’t tell me “this part of the class sucks,” without giving some clear direction on how you would want it changed. – What would you tell yourself at the start of this class about how to be successful, based on what you now know. Yes, I’m asking for you to teleport yourself back to May 26th and tell yourself how to master this class based on what you know NOW. This might be the most useful portion of the assignment, as I will take the best answers and PROVIDE THEM TO STUDENTS for Fall 2020. I want you to carefully critique the course materials under the “START HERE” tab in Blackboard. Did I give you appropriate instructions? What would you change, if anything? To be clear, I don’t want to know your views on these items as much as WHY you feel that way. I want CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, so don’t tell me “this part of the class sucks,” without giving some clear direction on how you would want it changed. The more specific your feedback, the better the score. You can use screenshots, mock-ups and notes to make your points (but they DO NOT COUNT toward the word count for this assignment). Moreover, the more specific your feedback, the more likely I might actually take your feedback to heart and change the course. So yeah, the VIFA is an opportunity for you to openly share about what is working and not working in this class and generally for “virtual instruction” at CSUDH. Moreover, it is an opportunity for you, the student, to be active in influencing how I move forward with this course and Law 240 for Fall 2020. Last point – the instructions here are 1426 words. DO NOT try to just quickly answer these questions. That is a recipe for a crappy paper. Thing about these themes. Craft your thoughts. Outline the paper. Then write. That is if you want that 50 points (aka 5% of the possible grade). In other words, you have a chance to move you grade one half up with this assignment alone. But know I want, need and demand QUALITY FEEDBACK. If you not gonna bring it, why do it at all? The VIFA will be due on JULY 28, 2020 at 8PM (will add to your Weekly Assignments tab for submission) and consists of an essay between 2-5 pages (roughly 500 words per page – so let’s not play games with font size, margins, double-spacing, etc.). You will NOT be graded on what you say, but the quality of your thought and contribution.
