This essay is about what your life would be like not being as you are now. Imagine yourself from a different background, or physically different. Give yourself a different physical or mental identity and try living a day with that mindset. Look up sources from people who have the challenge that you choose, and both practice their limitations and freedoms, as well as discover your own. You will then process these ideas and experiences from your own life as well as the lives of those you research. In your analysis, discuss the following
How are societal attitudes about the differences shaped?
What challenges are there or what freedoms are there?
How does one adapt to those challenges or freedoms?
What are some material effects of these differences on/in society? In other words what is the impact of the attitudes on individuals, relationships, society? Describe some specific examples of that impact.
How should individuals and/or societies engage with differences, norms and stereotypes?
Specific topic suggestions—Regardless if you choose a background/culture change or a physical change, you can choose a variety of avenues to explore: the limitations and freedoms, social acceptance/rejection/attitudes, cultural norming, health, work, etc. Choose the themes or ideas that resonate with you. Your essay needs a point of focus, a specific aspect of the broad topic that interests or concerns you.
You must cite a minimum of one of the unit’s articles on differences, and at least three additional relevant source you find on your own. You may also use any previous articles from class in other units if you find them relevant.
