Advanced nursing leader roles require additional essential knowledge and skills beyond basic registered nurse education and needing a Master’s-prepared degree, among other things (King, 2018). While some experts believe that the nurse leader and nurse educator roles are considered advanced practice nurse roles, however, some experts are against it. Identifying these roles though as APN roles has pros and cons. The pros include overall improved quality of health care as these nurses apply the acquired additional skills and knowledge they learned to fulfill the requirements on finishing the graduate degree. APRNs learned how to use research and are more aware of the evidence-based practices which they could use to educate or share the knowledge to their organizations, including their peers, and translate the knowledge into actual safe practices. It also makes APRNs becoming more competent, earning credibility, and learning qualities that will help them to be a good leader, which is also needed to make changes if necessary, to an organization, to implement evidenced-based practices.

The cons for identifying nurse leader roles and nurse educator roles as advanced practice nurses are mostly the opposite of mentioned pros. These include taking and passing the necessary exam to be considered APRNs as well as receiving high expectations from organizations, including peers, as APRNs are supposedly highly skilled and highly knowledgeable compared to registered nurses since they went through extended education.
