Project Submission #1 – Single Slide Proposing Topic

Students will develop a single powerpoint slide presenting an equipment replacement or cost reduction that is applicable to the organization. This presentation is only a proposal of a concept for further development, and shall include at least three courses of action (COAs) (one being the status quo).

Project Submission #2 – Project Economic Analysis

Students will develop a complete economic analysis from compiling available information and making appropriate estimations where required for the courses of action (COAs) presented. If an alternative system is being suggested, the full lifecycle cost should be developed as compared to the lifecycle cost of the original system. Upgrades to existing capabilities should include retirement costs of systems, labor for installation and commissioning, and any applicable usage costs. This is to be submitted as a calculation package on computation paper, with adequate explanations and information to independently follow the calculation set.

Project Submission #3 – White Paper

Based on the calculations performed, student will develop a short white paper presenting the equipment replacement or cost reduction (including adequate system context). This paper is to be written to target leadership within an organization and to defend any necessary funding requests to seed these efforts. Students will verbally present their white papers to the class (or through a short discussion for the online section).

I think part of the problem was that I made the comments against the first submission and not the final submission. I’ve copied them below.

I think this will be an interesting approach. I think it would be best suited to a specific building, so that there are clear roof and grounds dimensions.


-One COA should be maintaining the status quo – cost of water use (including water cost and sewer taxes) for designated uses.

-COA #2 could be roof top collection and #3 could be storm water garden collection.

You are attributing operational costs to items, where I would expected them to be contributed to maintenance actions or consumption of some kind. That could use further explanation, or break out another way. Also, based on the values I do not think these units are in US Dollars.

I am having a difficult time following your roof collection calculations. This course of action is presented by itself and not against other alternatives (i.e. digging wells, public water utility). The concept of this project is to compare different cost structures.
