Normally you would be required to attend a live classical concert and write a report of your experience. You will be asked to view several YouTube videos, and describe them together as if they constituted a concert that you attended. Consult “How to write a concert paper” to see what I am looking for in the paper.
Watch two videos from each category, as if you attended two concerts, and compare and contrast them in your paper to each other. So, pick one from each list as “Concert A,” and then a different one from each list as “Concert B.
Watch one from this first list (all 3-6 minutes; short “concert openers”):
Stanford “The Blue Bird”:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIC32jxkI40
Rachmaninoff, “Priidtie” from the All-Night Vigil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCB8LZlLlGo
Watch one from this second list (all 10-14 minutes; medium length pieces)
Vaughan Williams. “The Lark Ascending”:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mof12M4B-1g
Watch one from this third list (all 30-40 minutes; extended, “meatiest” work of a concert):
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-hn8WH_-3U&t=565s
Beethoven Triple Concerto:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkXGtE8_cig
This will give you the equivalent of approximately 1 hour watching (probably 30-45 minutes shorter than your average concert). [Note — in order to see the names of the ensembles and performers, you need to watch the videos on YouTube, and not just by watching them in the above embeds. Hover your cursor over the word “YouTube” in the embedded video, and click on it to watch directly on YouTube.]
Discuss each video using the criteria set forth for the concert paper in “How to write a concert paper.” Imagine that the three pieces together comprise one concert that you attended. Naturally, concerts usually consist of one performing organization doing several pieces; once you have watched all three, you will likely have seen three completely different groups/ensembles, which would never actually perform together like this. For the sake of this assignment, however, we will suspend our disbelief. Identify each ensemble/group in the paper.
