Personal Philosophy Of Education
This assignment will allow you to articulate your own philosophy of education and organize the bits and pieces of a lifetime of being a student and observing the world around you. A philosophy is not a curriculum statement or a description of your teaching style. It is a statement about the beliefs and ideals that underlie your thinking. It is a set of beliefs that regulate your actions. Your philosophy of education statement should outline your set of beliefs about the purpose, process, nature, and ideals of public education. By bringing your philosophy of education to a conscious level, thinking carefully about it, challenging your assumptions, and organizing your ideas into a written statement, you will have a solid foundation on which to begin teaching. A well-developed sense of purpose, values, and underlying beliefs about teaching and learning will help to maintain focus throughout your teaching career.
It is vital that you are able to name what you see as the purpose of education and how you intend on approaching your classroom. It is critical that you are able to knit your ideas closely to key educational philosophies and assert your perspective as an educator. It is important that you detail your beliefs about students and consider how students operate within a larger world.
We spent this week looking at Dewey’s Pedagogic Creed and Nodding’s Aims of Education. You can see how their belief statements are incredibly well spelled out and their approach is crystal clear. Although I do not expect you to go into quite as much detail in this assignment, I do want you to consider their craft as authors.
To complete this assignment,
Think about your own approach and experiences in education. Make a list of all of the things that are important to you as a student and to you as a teacher or future teacher. Consider why you think these elements are important. What will you do as a teacher to ensure that these important factors are present in your classroom and are reflected in your instructional strategies and classroom-management techniques?
Read about the major philosophies of education: Essentialism, Perennialism, Progressivism, and Social Reconstructionism. There are others, but these four represent a broad range of general recognized educational philosophies and should serve as a good starting place by which you will build your own. You can find these in the document titled “Huerta- Educational Philosophies” or you may do your own research. Explore philosophies that match your beliefs.
Write a paper in which you discuss your beliefs in terms of the philosophies, and explain which of these resonates with you the most and why. Your paper should be well structured and logically organized to demonstrate how your teaching philosophy (i.e., values and beliefs) relates to what you will do in the classroom (e.g., instructional strategies, use of technology, role of collaboration, types of discipline, respectful rapport). This paper should describe your core beliefs about teaching and learning and how these beliefs will be enacted in the classroom. Here are questions that you should assert in your paper:
· What do you believe is the purpose of education?
· What are schools for?
· What will be your purpose as a teacher in a school?
· How will you view the nature of learning?
· How do students learn best?
· What should be taught at school?
· How will your approach to school and learning sit in context with the larger community?
To receive full credit your paper should be 2-3 pages long, double-spaced. You need to support your ideas by providing specific examples and connect these to at least 3 references/quotes from readings. Remember to cite any sources in APA format that you used to help you develop your ideas or that inspired your teaching philosophy. Write from your heart and be creative in how you present your beliefs.
