Students will write an analysis of at least 500 words–not counting the heading, title, and reference list–that only I and our TA will see. Double-space your lines and use a conventional 12-point font. Use paragraphs to organize your thoughts. Paragraphs are one requirement of effective writing.
This assignment involves analyzing and synthesizing the ways in which you see our categories show up in our assigned readings. Module 5 requires students to use the category/ies authenticity and or legitimacy. You may use one or both of these categories. The analysis must be based on the assigned chapters in Roper in Module 5. You will be reading and watching for examples of how authenticity and or legitimacy got established and maintained in the time periods and situations we are studying. How did they determine one was an “authentic” witch? How was the hunt for witches legitimized? Choose at least one example from each assigned chapter, and write about them.
Organize your writing in paragraphs.
Include a vertical heading in the upper left-hand corner of the first page (.5 point) containing
your name [hit return],
your instructor’s name (Dr. Daughtrey) [hit return]
the course (REL 374) [hit return]
the date [hit return]
Your centered title must be the basic title of the assignment (for this assignment if you write about authenticity, use the title Authenticity. If you write about legitimacy, use the title Legitimacy. If you write about them both, use the title Authenticity and Legitimacy). (.5 point) Skip a line/leave a space and begin your writing.
Double-space your lines and use a conventional 12-point font.
Your FIRST sentence must contain some form of the category you are working with (in Module 5, that is authenticity and or legitimacy–you do not have to use them both in the first sentence). Make sure this sentence makes sense and that it introduces the main examples you intend to write about. (2 points)
Do not begin this academic essay with a free-standing quote.
Use the category you are working with throughout your analysis. Use it for the framework for your analysis.
Use bold print to highlight the category wherever the word appears in your analysis. (.5 point)
Locate yourself in time and place somewhere in the first 2 sentences. Your first sentence should have told me specifically who you are writing about. Be specific about the time and place YOU are writing about. (Copying and pasting “the Middle Ages and other time periods in Europe” will not fulfill this criterion.) (.5 point)
Include at least one example from each of the assigned chapters. In Module 5, that means you will have at least FIVE examples of how authenticity and or legitimacy work in this analysis.
Include only ONE quote–no more–from the assigned reading in Roper for this module as described above. Integrate this quote skillfully so that it illuminates something about how concerns about WITCHCRAFT and WITCHES operated in the lives of the human beings we are studying in the examples you chose to write about. (2 points)
Cite Roper using a parenthetical in-text citation at the end of the quote. (.5 point)
Use this Chicago Style Guide format for these parenthetical citations: (Roper 2004, 26). This citation occurs before the period at the end of the quote, and after the quotation marks.
Do not quote from any other resource, but you can refer to a required film or other assigned resource and cite it as just described.
Any word-for-word copying from any source must include quotation marks.
If you use the Kindle edition of a textbook, cite both quotes and paraphrases like this: (Roper 2004, Kindle Location 2351). Again, the parenthetical citation belongs inside the period that closes your sentence. No quotes from anyone else are allowed unless specifically required in the instructions.
Be careful of the length of your quotes; no more than 15% of your analysis may come from your quote. (E.g. If you write exactly the minimum of 500 words, no more than 75 of that total word count may be from quotes (15% of the 500 words).
In keeping with academic conventions, all assignments that refer to or quote from ideas that are not your own must include citations. Religious Studies uses the Chicago Style Guide, 7th Edition. See the ASU Libraries Chicago site, the Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide, and or the Purdue Writing Lab for support on using Chicago to cite your sources in this class. Reference lists should occur after the content of your written work, including in discussion forums. (2 points)
