This is 3 part assignment. You need to write 3 different paper:
+ assignment description : 1 page.
+google tour program: 3 slides
+ research paper: 5 pages.
First choose an educational program. This program may be a program focused on in your Explore A Question assignment, a placement where a student works, or may be identified based on a search of the research databases. For example, if you are interested in reading literacy, you might search the library database for interventions on this topic.
Next based on what you learn about the program, identify the motivational theory or theories that this program uses. For example, you might discover that the reading literacy program you’ve chosen uses goal-setting and rewards or praise to encourage learners’ skill development. Your paper would include sections which review the literature on motivational theory relating to goal setting and reward use.
You will link the program you’ve chosen with the research on the motivational theory or theories you have identified. For example, you would discuss specific motivational strategies used by the literacy program, their effectiveness, and integrate the research findings from the articles you discuss to specific examples of practices in the program that you are analyzing.
Motivational Theories to Consider or Use in Your Analysis:
(Note – choose the theories that work best for your program – approximately 2-4 theories)
1) Effects of reward use or praise
4) Goals and goal-setting effects on motivation
6) Self-determination theory or intrinsic motivation
7) Attribution theory (locus of control, stereotype threat, growth mindset, etc.)
8) Importance of teacher expectations (for motivation, learning, or performance)
In addition, your paper must look at the research on the role of context (i.e., gender, developmental, race and income accessibility, etc.) in the importance of the theories that you are using. Are there equity issues that related to the way your program motivates its learners?
This assignment is composed of three parts (see the Course Syllabus for due dates):
A. ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION – To ensure that students start out on the right track, you have the opportunity to submit a one-page summary description of the program you have chosen, how you will be able to access information about the program, and the motivational theories you will be using for their analysis. They also will provide a reference list with at least 6 current scholarly references (in APA style) on the motivational theories that they will be using in the assignment. Sources should be peer-reviewed sources published in the past 10 years. This is an extra credit opportunity.
B. GOOGLE TOUR OF PROGRAM – This part of the project involves creating a Google Tour that provides background information on your program and examples. In your tour, you will describe your program (e.g., background, location, purpose, age of participants, ethnic composition, curriculum, techniques, etc.) and provide specific examples of how the program motivates (or fails to motivate) its learners.
The Google Tour should include a minimum of 3 slides (360 degrees photos) and at least 2-3 “points of interest” per slide. Each point of interest should include a minimum of two paragraphs of pertinent information. The points of interest are still photos that include your text describing the program and your examples. “Publish” your tour (either public or unlisted) and include the link to your tour with your Evaluation Research Paper (listed below).
You can find information about how to create a Google Tour at the following link: https://arvr.google.com/tourcreator/ Google tours use 360-degree photos. You can find many of these online (available in Tour Creator). If you want to make 360-degree photos of your own – there is a free phone app called “Google Street View.” You can connect your images to text entries using the “points of interest” feature of the tours.

C. EVALUATION RESEARCH PAPER – This portion of the project is a short research paper (approximately 5-6 pages – not including title page or references) that examines the motivational theories used in your educational program.
Provide an introduction identifying your program and the theories that you have chosen for the evaluation. Then using the current scholarly research that you found describe each of your theories and how they are related to learners’ motivation. Provide examples from your program and explain how those examples connect to our knowledge about those theories. Remember to include the what we know about equity and diversity issues as they relate to the theories that you have chosen and how you see that played out in your program.
Your paper needs to be APA style (type-written and double-spaced) with a title page, formatting, headings, citations, and references. Links to APA resources are listed in the course’s Canvas modules.
All information from your research sources must be properly cited. Avoid even unintentional plagiarism and cheating! Please put content in your own words. Minimize the use of direct quotes from your sources. If you must use one or two quotes in your paper they should be brief, explained in your own words, and properly cited as quotes with quotation marks. Using someone else’s ideas without giving them credit is also considered plagiarism (even if you put it in your own words). Reusing your own work for a new assignment is cheating (unless you have permission from the instructor in advance). You will not receive ANY credit for the assignment and may be failed in the course if you plagiarize or cheat. Check your syllabus or course catalog for the definitions of academic integrity at SJSU.
Completed parts of the assignment will need to be submitted to the Assignment area of the course shell on the due date listed in the syllabus. Please see the Program Evaluation Rubric for additional information regarding grading of this assignment.
