For a variety of reasons, students are often told to avoid Wikipedia for academic research. Yet Wikipedia tends to be a source most of us consult regularly in our personal lives, relying on it as a quick source of information on most subjects we can think of. Your rhetorical purpose in this paper will be to analyze and evaluate a Wikipedia entry of your choice to shed light on the role Wikipedia can play in academic research and writing. Because this is a more limited context for Wikipedia’s use, you should imagine your audience as undergraduate writers and those who care about their writing (e.g. composition instructors, composition scholars, writing center staff, librarians, etc.).
Avoid: announcing your thesis by saying “this essay will” using first person, unless telling a story about the topic (in other words, don’t say things like “I did research”) being biased about your topic summarizing a paragraph at the end of it or ending paragraphs repetitiously (e.g. “this also shows Wikipedia is not a good source”) summarizing in the conclusion starting with a generality
