CJUS 110 Final Paper Assignment
Due 12/18 by Midnight (try to turn it in earlier in exam week)
The wonderful thing about this paper assignment, is that you have already started it with your weekly assignments during the “theory” section of the course
The final paper should be AT LEAST 5 pages double spaced (12 point font with 1 inch margins)
All sources must be cited (news articles, etc., anything that you don’t know off the top of your head), and include a works cited section.
Do the following:
Fully describe a crime/case of your choice
This can absolutely be the case you’ve been using all semester!
Define the crime that occurred (Larceny, serial murder, money laundering, etc.)
Give a detailed description of the events and those involved in the crime, including both criminals and victims
What happened, what were the damages/losses, etc.?
If there was an “outcome” (like a conviction, or if it went unsolved) describe that at well
Apply TWO criminological theories, of your choice, to the crime in question
Which theories do you think best “explain” the crime?
For each theory, discuss:
The elements that “fit” (what does the theory seem to get right?)
The elements that don’t “fit” (i.e. what does the theory miss?)
Given these two theories, which one do you think “fits” the best as an explanation of the crime?
Given the theory that you think fits best with the crime, create a solution/prevention strategy
What actions could society (including police, general public, lawmakers, etc.) take in order to prevent future crimes like this?
Make sure to draw on theory here! If the theory says solving poverty will fix crime, don’t suggest that arresting more people will help (and vice versa)
Given your proposed solution, who would need to be involved in order to make it a reality?
Do you think the way that the crime was handled fits with what your solution suggests? Why?
Briefly summarize your paper in a short conclusion paragraph
