The Role of a Researcher

The researcher’s role relates to the development of scholarly identity; the requirement also provides new and different views to the readers. As scholars, students experience doubt, fears, and anxiety, all part of the journey while developing a new learning skill. Anything worth having requires a mindset and grit. Becoming an independent researcher requires discipline, while adopting a professional and scholarly identity is a process. (p.30). Understanding that becoming a researcher comes with ups and downs, allowing yourself to develop skills to build our identity with transitioning from a master’s level into an expert. This process requires hours of researching, feedback from your professor, and peers. While developing identity as a scholar, we must create a mindset that will create positive thinking, allowing us to doubt if we have what it takes. While retrieving further information as one emerges into an independent researcher, wecan develop stress and fall into the imposter syndrome and affecting our self-worth.

(Levecque, Anseel, De Beuckelaer, Van der Heyden, & Gisle, 2017; Longfield, Romas, & Irwin, 2006). Which are all followed by our fears not allowing the time needed to become an independent researcher. Viewing all three articles and views as the researcher’s role while transitioning it is shown with time, we can navigate with confidence while providing significant research.

Developing Identity

As students embark, they are exposed through the academic programs also requirements; it takes time to develop their identity. Feedback allows a student to experience engagement with their peers, professors, and various educational resources to begin developing our identity. Coffman et al., (2016) elaborated and went in-depth to express where it is a journey it will take several years for a student to identify and become confident while building their voice. Throughout the course and achieving a goal, it also states the importance of social interactions with many scholars, which allows one to understand that they are not alone to guiding them to develop who they are as a scholar (Coffman et al., 2016). Garcia and Yao, (2019) it is journey and mention that the road to developing an identity will take lots of time and plenty of personal frustration (Garcia & Yao, 2019). Students may feel overwhelmed with academic course loads, limits on time, and a lack of resources which will cause them to procrastinate. Developing an identity will be a gradual process where experiences and research will build off each other, as students begin to understand their abilities, eliminate self-doubt and their own impostor syndrome as they transform into scholars and as stated (Coffman et al.,2016) express it will take years.

The development of a scholarly identity is not a straight path, it has it’s ups and down direction to become why they emphasis the multiple lanes you may journey to. Inouye and McAlpine, (2017) informs the process as a scholarly trajectory, where a student develops their identity through the emergence of three aspects: Intellectual, networking, and institutions (Inouye & McAlpine, 2017). When it comes to intellectual aspect it refers to their independent research and study style. Allowing and individual to gather there information of their topic on their own while developing their voice. Another nugget and impotance will be networking ability to reach to outside sources, people, and teams best your faulty to add to your research and it helps understanding and synthesize different perspectives rather than one voice.

Transformational Learning

While transformation takes time to become comfortable and allowing self to evolve into a an independent researcher is more as a transformational learning. Mezirow (1997) describes transformational learning as “it is a change that consist of framework ((Coffman et al., 2016). Extends the process as transformative learning requiring individuals’ perspective” (p.5). learning anything new takes time and can create on to doubt or believe that it is even possible. Garcia and Yao, (2019) Walks us through better understanding educational learning one is transforming to become an independent researcher your start to question your identity. The beauty of a community that can offer support as working online can be a lonely journey. Online learning is growing rapidly while it takes time to transition and the best way would be connecting with groups at are aligned. If a doctoral goal is to continue a path of transformational learning socializing within their community to find success as an expert in their focus field and build a support group. It has been shown that while early socializing is key to a research and doctoral student’s success and can be accomplished by various means and platforms such as face-to-face communication, conferences, feedback from professors, peers, and other scholars (Garcia & Yao, 2019). This communication is important to the development and transformation of students into scholars by being afforded the opportunity to internalize various perspectives that may be different, and in some cases contradictory to a student’s own beliefs or understandings. Networking enables doctoral students to work as a part of a team where they grow through networking and feedback. Inouye and McAlpine (2017) highlight the importance of socializing through networking and feedback (Inouye & McAlpine, 2017). They also highlight that it is important for doctoral students to be able to accept criticism and negative feedback in order to develop effectively and efficiently. In some cases, scholarly students are afraid of negative feedback, it may promote a negative affect that could detrimental to their success as a student. In order to succeed they should be willing to accept negative feedback or criticism as a positive.

Thus, it is imperative to better understand how education doctoral students make sense of their identity and role within their new online scholarly community in order to better support their scholarly identity development. Specifically, we seek to answer the question, “how do higher education doctoral students develop their scholarly identity within an online doctoral seminar course?”

The imperative of understanding the online context is driven by the continuous growth of online education. Since the early 2000’s, online learning in higher education has made substantial gains in terms of enrollment.

Conclusion

Student scholars who wish to be successful as academic scholars should focus on establishing their scholarly identity and ability to socialize with a network and community of practice. A student whose focus is to develop their identity on their own is going to struggle and may never achieve scholarship. Networking, CoP’s, and feedback are essential to growth as a student and a scholar. Socializing with other students and faculties allows students to grow and develop. It will allow the student scholars to view different perspectives to better form their own arguments, strengthen their position, and even offer an opportunity for them to change their position. It will allow them to refine their skills as they develop their scholarly trajectory in their transformation towards a scholarly identity. Garcia and Yao (2019), Coffman et al. (2016), and Inouye and McAlpine (2017) conceptualize the importance of communication and developing a scholarly identity through qualitative research to identify how to transform from a student into a scholar. Further quantitative research must be accomplished to identify how socializing effects doctoral student progression and development.
