In the Final Assessment Essay, students are expected to: ● Identify a clear thesis. ● Use appropriate content to illustrate this thesis ● Explain the textual evidence presented through close reading skills and use of literary terms ● Display an understanding of the author and a diversity of perspectives ● Organize and synthesize material to present a cogent explanation ● Produce a clear, well-organized essay in which sources are properly cited and conforms to conventions of standard written English Assignment Overview Choose at least two texts by different authors (i.e., do not choose two texts by the same author) in at least two genres (poetry, fiction, etc.). The best essays will bring the chosen texts into conversation with each other. Consider, when selecting texts to pair together, what their relationship is to each other: do they speak directly to each other? Does one critique another? Do they use different approaches to explore similar issues? Were they written in different periods? Does gender, sexuality, class, nationality, or ability inflect their work? Be sure to use multiple quotations from the texts to support your ideas; be as detailed, precise, and specific as you can. Avoid generalizations: this essay is an opportunity to think about the complexities of how and what authors explore, expose, or reveal about race, so you should try to avoid platitudes. You must use MLA format for this essay, including parenthetical citations and a Works Cited list. Your final product will be about 3 pages long. Assessment Prompt: Race and Place Explore the relationship between race and place in two or more texts we have studied this semester. “Place” in this case could be a setting (a location, dwelling, neighborhood, etc., at a specific time), or something beyond setting that includes memory or history (for example, the nation as a place ghosted by slavery). For example: one might argue that although their settings are very different, filmmaker Jordan Peele, musician Childish Gambino (Donald Glover), and novelist Gloria Naylor each take apparently mundane settings and imbue them with a sense of historical memory that evokes systemic violence against African Americans. Or one might demonstrate how a place and its objects are connected with empowerment in two or more texts. Texts we read that lend themselves well to this assignment: Get Out, “I, Too,” and “We Real Cool” (Peele, Hughes, and Brooks). You may also choose to incorporate another text from our reading this semester if you see a connection between race and place.
