Students will write a 1250 to 1500 word paper articulating the main ideas of the doctrine of the Trinity as developed in the course materials (the lectures and the Jones textbook). The earliest Christians expressed, pondered, refined, and re-articulated their convictions about the God of Israel who sent his Son Jesus Christ and poured out his Spirit on all flesh. (1) What are the key questions and ideas, and (2) what are the major errors (heresies) that need to be avoided? In addressing these two questions, students should give attention to the interconnectedness of this doctrine with worship and prayer, as well as key confessions of faith and the disputes that produced them.
Students will be required to cite sources (the textbooks, Scripture, & the lecture notes) with in-text citations (for example (Jones 2014:43) or (Williams 2016:11)). Cite lecture videos as follows (Mahfood 10/1/19) *or* (Mahfood, “On the Nature(s) and Person of Jesus Christ”). *If you cite anything besides the textbooks and lectures*, you will need to include a bibliography of sources cited, otherwise no bibliography is necessary. Do not use quotations unless you have to—paraphrasing in your own words and providing a citation is much better) and especially avoid lengthy quotations. If possible, it’s better to paraphrase sources in your own words (and cite them). If you use information that you did not know before beginning research for this assignment, you must cite it. ANY & EVERY SENTENCE IN WHICH YOU USE INFORMATION FROM A SOURCE MUST HAVE A CITATION! If you have questions about the process or the paper, please let me know as soon as they come up! You can find the rubric by which I will grade the paper on Sakai under the documents tab.
