For this essay, you are going to use comparison and contrast as the basis for convincing a specific audience to choose one option over another. The writer of a compare/contrast essay needs to have a purpose—a meaning—for writing the essay. Why does the audience want or need to know these similarities/differences? Consider the overall rhetorical situation.
You will present reasons why one option is better suited to your particular audience. These ideas will arise out of your own knowledge and will be further supported by two outside articles/websites which you locate on your own (through Google). You will integrate these articles/websites by using ONLY DIRECT QUOTATION. You will need to use at least one quote from each article/website.
Organization: You can choose to format in either of the patterns we discussed: subject by subject or point by point. Regardless of which option you choose, you will need to establish criteria (the specific features or elements that you are using to evaluate the subjects) as the basis of comparison and contrast.
Audience: Consider who are trying to convince. Who you are trying to convince will likely inform what points or areas you will need to address on the given options. This will also help you create an effective thesis statement.
Thesis: Remember, you are making an argument. You will need to include a thesis statement at the beginning of your paper that meets our 4 criteria for an effective thesis statement.
Purpose: To consider a rhetorical situation and its role in an argument. To convince your audience of a certain position after discussing both options as they relate to your overall thesis. To practice finding sources which support your ideas. To seamlessly incorporate the ideas of others into your paper using quote sandwiches in order to strengthen your argument. To identify a topic which allows you to complete the assignment fully and effectively.
Requirements:
Two outside articles/websites/sources
Integrate the outside sources into your paper via direct quotation (at least 2 quotes–1 from each source)
Properly document and cite the outside sources via in-text citations and a Works Cited page
4 typed pages which adhere to MLA format + a Works Cited page
