Hello Professor Eli, for my revised research proposal I was thinking about doing musical instruments as art objects as in the sculpted drums of the Asante (or Ashanti) and the Yoruba. I plan on opening the research paper with the significance of music in their culture then talk about the significance of the drums, how it was made and what it is used for between the two cultures. These drums have significant meaning and value to the culture. There are three fundamental modes of drumming: signal mode, speech mode, and dance mode. Although the purpose of the dance mode of drumming is mostly recreational, the signal and speech modes are played strictly for communication. My goal is to compare and contrast Asante and Yoruba drums and explain why they are important to the culture.
