The Classical Era. By definition Classical mean pertaining to the highest order of excellence. Were we meeting in person I would ask you to name something you would described as Classic – a movie, a book, a song even Classic Coke. So this is where we are in the brief 50 year era. As you will read, it is an era of Order and Logic. Note the pages on Classicism and Enlightened Culture. Although a limited time, this era produced three outstanding composers – Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. One of the major developments of this era, and the one we will focus on is the Classical Symphony. Although much good vocal music was produced, the emphasis of the era was instrumental. The symphony, as we know it, was primarily developed by Haydn, expanded upon by Mozart, and perfected by Beethoven.
Listen to the second movement of Haydn’s Surprise Symphony. It is one of my favorites by Haydn, He led such a very ordered life as a servant to the Esterhazys. Read about symphony on p. 178. You will note that this is an example of an “absolute’ symphony – meaning the music was written purely for listening.
Also listen to Eine kleine Nachtmusik. It is a theme that is used frequently in movies and may sound familiar to you. Also absolute music.
