For this project you will assume the role of a data analyst in a sports organization. You will need to determine what type of organization you will be, in what sport, and at what level, before moving into the process of collecting, analyzing and presenting data to decisions makers within your organization.
You will also identify a specific department within your sports organization that you will be exploring data for. Your choices of sports organization and the department you’ll be reporting to will help determine the subsequent data you collect and the kinds of questions you’ll ask of the data. For instance, if you choose to be a professional baseball organization that reports to the marketing department, you will choose a different form of data analysis than a minor league data analyst working with pitching coaches to improve a pitcher’s form.
Step One – For the first step, you will acquire or create an original data set using a quantitative or qualitative method, or you will find a significant original data source related to sport from an outside source. The data source must contain real data, and you must provide original links to the data or the entire collected dataset if you created the data with a survey or some other kind of instrument. At this stage, the quality of your data will assessed out of 5 points.
Step Two – Using one of the practical applications we have learned in class, you will apply an analytic approach to your data, by asking questions of the data, performing regressions and other statistical measurements on the data, and creating data visualizations to share findings from the data. For this step, you will need to ask a minimum of three (3) and a maximum of five (5) questions of the data with the purpose of finding novel insights to share with decisions makers within your sports organization. After analyzing the data you will create a minimum of five data visualizations that graphically represent the insights discovered in the data. The quality of your analysis will be assessed out of 5 points.
Step Three – You will complete a six-page paper outlining your role in the organization, your primary audience for your report and the process of collecting, analyzing and visualizing the data. You will include all of your visualizations in this report. You will also use your report to make recommendations for your primary audience based on the findings in your data. Your report should include multiple novel insights about the data as well as address a business need that a typical sports organization would have (e.g. some sort of improvement on an existing process, strategy, etc.).
