For this assignment, you will be visualizing pitching data for one major league pitcher during the 2019 season: Zach Greinke. You will be replicating PitchFX graphics commonly found on the MLB websites and used during games to highlight a pitcher’s performance when pitching.
Start by downloading all of Geinke’s pitching statistics from baseballsavant.mlb.com into a csv file. Copy the columns for his pitch type, pitch speed, pitch release, and pitch location over the plate into a new excel file. Format the new excel file into a Table, for importing into PowerBI.
Import the data into PowerBI.
All of your visualizations should be located on the same dashboard page to enable them to be integrated with one another.
First, create a PitchFX scatter chart showing the position of each of his pitches as they crossed home plate. Make each pitch type appear in a different color.
Second, create a scatter chart that shows the release position of each pitch from the pitcher’s hand. For this chart, you will need to change the X and Y axis to change the dimensions of the chart to reflect a high release position. You can do this by using the Format tool in the Visualization options.
Third, create a stacked bar chart showing the average pitch speed for each pitch type. Make sure each pitch type is color coded differently.
Finally, you will click on the ‘Reading View’ option at the top of the dashboard and save your Dashboard. Take a screenshot of the completed dashboard and upload that to the Dropbox along with a copy of your excel dataset.
