Preparation: Read Chapters 1 -3 and complete all items in the modules associated with these chapters.
Discussion Topic: This discussion is a group assignment, but you are graded individually. We will create a class notebook on:
key terms,
key concepts,
key researchers or scholarly individuals who are mentioned in the textbook.
The purpose is to practice using relevant anthropological terminology, deal with complex ideas, and practice relating one fact to another. This “exercise” also serves as exam preparation.
What to Write: Select only what is found in Chapters 1 through 3; you can supplement your selection with an outside source, but the source must be fully documented.
Length: a solid paragraph of at least five complete sentences. Be concise and to the point.
Introduce your term, concept, or scholar/researcher by name. Start off your discussion by saying something like:
I am presenting the concept adaptive radiation. OR
I am presenting the term phenotype. OR
I am presenting Charles Lyell.
(These are only examples.)
Put your term, concept, or person in bold font to make it easy for everyone to spot your selection. In an essay, bold font wouldn’t be used for this purpose.
Important: You must choose a term, concept or individual that is different from everyone else who has posted before you, so check what others have written. Feel free to post to each other on this discussion–always with respect and courtesy.
For a term or concept: In your own words explain the term or concept and how it relates to an understanding of human physiology, anatomy, genetics in general, or to adaptation and evolution. Provide an appropriate, specific example whenever possible.
For an individual: Describe in your own words who the individual was or is, when and where they lived, the scientific contribution they made and why it was significant. If their ideas are no longer valid or supplanted by newer insights, mention that as well. For this discussion, do not use Darwin or Mendel because both of them have already been covered extensively.
