Find something you are passionate about and begin researching it. You are welcome to use the teen sleep debate about schools changing their start times if you like, or you may choose your own topic. Determine the opposing side’s views so you can always be one step ahead of the opposition. Determine who your audience is and what you want them to do or to change. As you accomplish all these tasks, keep detailed notes. Write a summary of your progress, along with a correctly formatted works cited page. Your summary should explain your topic and state your claim, as well as describe your final product plan. This does not have to be lengthy, but it should be very specific. Like an objective summary, keep it brief and precise. The following notes will help you in organizing your pre-project research. Your summary and works cited will be posted as assignments next week, but it would be best to begin thinking about and completing this ahead of time.

Ethos – Establish trustworthiness and credibility (1,2,3)
Logos – Use facts, statistics, and expert opinions purposefully structured and organized for persuasive effect (3,4,5)
Pathos – Appeal to the audience’s emotions (1,3,5)
Do your research. I always suggest triangulating your information. In other words, if you find something repeated in at least three different sources, it is likely more credible or relevant than something that only appears in one source. Sources should be credible and current.
Create a works cited page of your sources. Identify quality sources of information about your topic. You need at least three sources, but can have as many as you choose to use. Having six sources does not mean you have done a close read of all the sources; sometimes you may skim and scan for important and relevant information/evidence.
Decide on a medium to make your argument. Create a poster/print ad, a slideshow, a podcast, a broadcast, a vlog, a comic strip, a movie trailer/commercial, a jamboard, etc, or write a traditional paper or a speech or an article complete with images and hyperlinks. You have total creative control over how to win your argument. Length and other criteria will depend upon your topic and your claim.
