Attachment A is a list of books related to various areas of Black Politics. Select, read, and prepare a review of a book from the list or your choice that must be approved by the instructor. The book review should be a minimum of 8-10 pages and follow the categories of the book review rubric. You must also present your review of the book to the class through a PowerPoint presentation that includes 5-7 slides. Rubrics are provided as guidance for both the Book Review and PowerPoint presentation.
GUIDELINES FOR POWERPOINT PRESENTATION FOR BOOK REVIEW
A book review is a description, critical analysis, and an evaluation on the quality, meaning, and significance of a book. Your PowerPoint, however, is your guide so that your audience will be able to understand the content of your book and your discussion and evaluation of it. A list the principal topics, and a brief summary of the author’s ideas about these topics, main points, and conclusions must be on the slides.
Please prepare, depending on the length of your book, a minimum of seven (7) and not more than twelve (12) for the PowerPoint presentation of your selected book.
The following elements should be included in the PowerPoint:
Slide 1- Book title, Author, Publisher, and Year of Publication. Type of Book i.e. Autobiography, Non-fiction-African American Migration etc.
Slide 2- Purpose of the Book-. State the author’s purpose in writing the book. Sometimes authors state their purpose in the preface or the first chapter.
Slides 3-5; or 3-10- Book Summary consists of a discussion of major themes, ideas and characters providing at least 4 excepts from the work.
Summarize (briefly), analyze, and comment on the book’s content. State your general conclusions. Pay particular attention to the author’s concluding chapter. Is the summary convincing? List the principal topics, and briefly summarize the author’s ideas about these topics, main points, and conclusions. Use specific references and quotations to support your statements. If your thesis has been well argued, the conclusion should follow naturally. It can include a final assessment or simply restate your thesis.
Slides 5 & 7; 11 & 12. -Your reaction to the book and your recommendation (negative or positive) as future reading to your classmates. Please do not say “I liked this book, and you should read it.”
