The essay that has been written so far: College tuition should be free Humanity has changed before our eyes and now it revolves around having a skill or attending college, to achieve getting a degree in a high paying field that matches your interests. The school system is built on free education where we endure twelve years of unnecessary work that does not relate to anything in life. Instead, of having the mindset on learning it’s on passing classes to get the highest GPA possible to earn a scholarship or get federal grants. Realistically fast-food chains require a high school diploma as the basic requirement to work there while high end jobs want an associate degree or more. Life has gotten tremendously expensive that working at fast food chains will not cut it. Furthermore, having qualifications and experience in your field, can result in your high paying job supporting the lifestyle you want to live. College should be free for everyone because not everyone is eligible for financial aid, grants, eligible to win scholarships, etc. Back in the late 1900’s college was free despite small fees; the government was content with letting the American people send their children to get a higher education. Like most things in life, it involves taking a risk to potentially help you and your family. Nowadays college is used as a business scheme to rob the poor and middle-class families of funding their children education because of the income they make. Despite, hearing that college is essential teachers and cap advisors, don’t mention the price you will have to pay initially for your college degree. Robert Scott states, “on average, tuition has increased 100 percent since 2001, even after accounting for inflation.” Furthermore, several years you will still be in debt from the student loans that you borrowed to take care of your classes and not be able to retire after forty years of working diligently. Although, free college could perhaps be a good thing it does have some downsides. The mindset of college students would be to procrastinate rather than focusing on their studies because of the lack responsibility put on them, this would result in lower completion rates. For instance, college students would take advantage of free tuition and constantly switch majors. Also, students would have a challenging time deciphering where they want to study for the next four years. Being that college is free it would influence property taxes to increase on the buildings. Moreover, the funding for free college would have to come from somewhere, this would mean increased taxes. However, regardless of whether college will be free, it will always result in people not being persistent in their studies. David Deming states, “eliminating tuition at all public colleges and universities would cost about seventy-nine billion, public higher education could be defrayed by redeploying money that the government is already spending.” The increased rate of students applying to postsecondary schools would boost our population to be well educated. This would lead our society to be more innovative. In other words, free college tuition would mean college students won’t feel pressured to just pursue a major that doesn’t interest them. To conclude, the younger generation will suffer the repercussions of attending college that has costly tuition. Instead, of planning their career after graduation they are worrying about tremendous amounts of debt and student loans they developed over the years. The sole purpose of going through high school and getting that diploma is to achieve greatness. Without the necessary components to make this happen you are looking at working at basic jobs until you can afford to retire. I say the solution to this is making college tuition free; the price is relatively large but won’t account for more than the government is spending. Also, if it can be beneficial to many people, it wouldn’t hurt to fund the education for people who can’t afford it.
