In an essay of 850 to 1000 words, discuss the potential of anthropological research to help us understand the effects of COVID-19 on human societies. To do this, choose two anthropologists whose work we have talked about in class, and also consider the work of ‘medical anthropologists’ more generally.

ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS:
Briefly introduce the coronavirus. Say what it is, when it began to spread, and some of the policies that governments put in place to try to prevent transmission.
Briefly define anthropology. Say what anthropology is, and what anthropologists do.
Explain why anthropology may be a useful framework for trying to understand human experiences, and the implications of, this global pandemic.
Then, state which two anthropologists from our syllabus you will be talking about in more detail.
Taking them up one by one, explain who they are, what their research is about, and what their main ideas are. For each one, say what you think their insights would bring to our understanding of the coronavirus. How you think they would do research about Covid-19. Where, in what contexts, and at what scale would they do their research? What would they pay attention to? What kinds of questions would they ask? Then take these same steps for ‘medical anthropologists’ in general (You don’t have to name a specific medical anthropologist.).

Be generous with your writing. Say more than you thought possible. Ask another question. Say one more thing. Then say yet another thing.
