In an essay of 850 to 1000 words, discuss the potential of anthropological research to help us understand the effects of COVID-19 on human societies. To do this, choose two anthropologists whose work we have talked about in class, and also consider the work of ‘medical anthropologists’ more generally.

Briefly define anthropology. Say what anthropology is, and what anthropologists do.

Explain why anthropology may be a useful framework for trying to understand human experiences, and the implications of, this global pandemic.

Then, state which two anthropologists from our syllabus you will be talking about in more detail.

Taking them up one by one, explain who they are, what their research is about, and what their main ideas are. For each one, say what you think their insights would bring to our understanding of the coronavirus. How you think they would do research about Covid-19. Where, in what contexts, and at what scale would they do their research? What would they pay attention to? What kinds of questions would they ask? Then take these same steps for ‘medical anthropologists’ in general (You don’t have to name a specific medical anthropologist.).

USING SOURCES:

Before, or as you write your paper, review the relevant sources from our course. These include but are not limited to the articles and Powerpoints in our weekly folders, as well as your collaborative exercises.

When the information you use comes from a specific source: name the source and state very clearly where the information comes from. If it is a direct quote and you have already used their name, put their words inside “quotation marks” and note the page number in parentheses. If it is a restatement of their idea, but in your own words, put their name and the page number in parentheses after your restatement – Example: (Abu-Lughod, 25). It is very important to show that you know where the ideas and information you are using come from.

ADVICE: An essay is an integrated piece of writing in which you address the questions in your own voice, in your own way, emphasizing what is most interesting to you, and your own understanding of the issues. Do not simply answer each question in the instructions and submit a list of one-line answers. Make sure that you are expressing yourself clearly and that the essay is well organized. Be generous with your writing. Say more than you thought possible. Ask another question. Say one more thing. Then say yet another thing.

DUE DATE: This essay is due on Blackboard by midnight on Tuesday, April 14.
