define and describe your topic; (e.g.,

Ultimately, you are studying what a social worker would do in this field,
but first you need to know why a social worker is needed. Give data and
the cause of this problem. Possible issues to be addressed are: what is
the history of the problem, it’s prevalence in the population, how does it
affect the society, are there different categories within the issue?

Population affected –
characteristics of people impacted by the
problem/need and receiving social work assistance. Include demographic
information– are certain groups affected more than others? – and the
kinds of ways persons affected by the problem may be impacted, both
short and long term, are relevant

Settings
or types of agencies/organizations
– consider the types of
agencies where this client group is served and/or advocacy is done to
alleviate this social problem. Briefly mention the different types of
agencies that may be involved with this type of client and then describe
more in detail one specific agency that works directly with this type of
client. Describe the nature of the agency/organization, whether it is
private or governmentally run, the scope of its services, and where and
how the social worker fits in. You might have to call such an agency or
actually interview a social worker working in such a setting to get concrete
information. Information from the
Days in the Lives of Social Workers
book should also be helpful.


relate what would be challenging about working in this
particular area of social work practice.

NASW Code of Ethics

One resource may be the Days in the Lives text and one may be the
textbook (used sparingly.)

The sixth may be a journal article or a book other than one of the
texts. Other examples are the occupational outlook handbook,
government websites, or personal communication.

A. Review your textbook chapters to see how social problems are
defined/described, followed by discussion about impacted populations
B. Occupational Outlook Handbook (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/) may be another
valuable resource.


Criteria for Written Assignment
Organization: clarity of main points; support for main points (examples, literature,
logic of arguments); all parts interrelate and are coherent with logical flow of
ideas. Most importantly, those who receive the highest grades will have followed
the instructions for the assignment.

required (all of which should be cited in the body of the paper AND listed in
References at the end):
Instructor’s overall impression of effort, sensitivity to subject and creativity.
Technical detail: See Professional Writing Standards, Section VII. If you are
from a major that uses non-APA formatting, make note of it at the beginning of
your paper.
The body of the Final Version should be 5-7 pages in length.
