This is a paper for you to write an exploratory autoethnography to talk about your own culture(s) and how your personal identities are informed/performed through the culture(s). We have read Carolyn Ellis and Art Bochner’s work on autoethnography. A recommended reading from Gust Yep’s “My Three Cultures” can also give you some guidance on how to write this paper. Hence, I am asking you to take a preliminary shot at writing your own culture(s) in autoethnographic style. It is like telling your own stories orally, but you write them down.
Here are elements for you to follow to write this paper –
Since this is an autoethnographic/personal narrative piece, there are no specific introduction and conclusion, but think about how you start telling and ending a story.
Identify Culture(s): Culture would be aspects such as race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, age, dis/ability, etc. What particular aspect(s) of culture (pick one or two) plays out in your own, family, neighborhood, school, or work life? Write a short story to debrief it. (You should go back and review the section “What is Culture” from Halualani Chapter 2)
Culture(s) as a Field of Force in Your Life: Connecting to the second point described above, write another story to reflect on how the aspect(s) of culture is a field of force between dominant structures or interests in the cultural group(s). Is there a difference in terms of how the culture(s) is defined or understood among these interests? How does that make you feel? (You should go back and review the section “Culture as a Field of Force” from Halualani Chapter 2)
If possible, concluding your paper by debriefing how your personal identity informed/performed by the particular aspect(s) of culture.
