As you have learned in Unit 1, identifying the function a target behavior serves for the individual is very important to designing an effective, function-based behavior intervention plan (BIP). We identify the function through the collection of data on the antecedents and consequences of the target behavior, typically using the antecedent-behavior-consequence (A-B-C) data form. After at least three observation sessions, patterns emerge in the data that allow the behavior analyst to hypothesize the probable function of the behavior. With that information, he/she can design an effective BIP.
For this discussion, create a scenario in which you have a new client who is exhibiting a target behavior. Describe the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) approaches, i.e., Indirect Assessment and Direct Descriptive Assessment, you will use and identify the probable function of the target behavior.
How will the identification of the function of the target behavior help you to design a function-based behavior intervention plan (BIP)?

A new client has started with our agency. She is a nine year old girl who has minimal to no ability to verbally communicate. During her intake process, she engaged in screaming and tantruming several times. Each time she engaged in this behavior, mom would give her milk to calm her down. This target behavior happened multiple times and each time it was the same consequence.
For this specific client, I will use a questionnaire for the parents as my indirect assessment. This questionnaire will include questions like what do you do when your child cries or is upset? If you do not know what they need, how do you handle that? These types of questions will be crucial in determining how her parents have been responding to her target behaviors and how those responses should be addressed. Secondly, a direct assessment will take place at school by her teacher since the behavior is unpredictable and would be hard to come to observe for (Watson, 2019). This assessment will include ABC data for when the client engages in tantrum behavior, including screaming.
After identifying the function of the target behavior, creating an effective BIP will become possible. Everything that is put into place will be a specific plan that will target only what that client is engaging in. The reason this is important is because it is about addressing the needs of the client and not about making a cookie cutter plan that is used for everyone. A client who engages in tantrum behavior for access compared to for escape should not be handled the same way.

Hello professor and class,
Suzy was referred to me by her parents who have been having difficulties with Suzy’s behavior of skin picking habit. She would get pick at bug bites until they would scab up and she would pick at the scabs using her index finger nail, scraping across the skin. Suzy’s parents have tried creams and other intervention strategies like putting on a long sleeve shirt to prevent the urge to pick. Nothing seemed to work for them.
Using indirect assessment , I would likely interview the parents to gain some insight of the situation they are facing. Indirect assessment methods are just information you gather from anyone who is associated with the child and sometimes you can even interview the child with the behavior (Watson et al., 2019). Direct descriptive assessment involves more of observation of the behavior in its natural environment and recording the observations(Watson et al., 2019). There are several ways of recording the data, but one such recording technique is the ABC’s – Antecedent, behavior, and consequence. The antecedent is important in identifying the probable function of the behavior. Why is Suzy picking her skin? The probable function of her behavior would be automatic reinforcement , meaning she does not need attention to maintain the behavior or to escape a task.
Identifying the probable function of the target behavior is an important part of the process prior to implementing any types of intervention in a behavior intervention plan. It would be unethical to randomly set an intervention for the target behavior without knowing the potential causes and what is maintaining the behavior. For Suzy’s behavior intervention plan I would probably implement differential reinforcement of alternative behavior. I would reinforce any alternative behavior based on a preference assessment for the preferred stimulus for reinforcement. I would withhold reinforcement if the target behavior occurs at any time during an assigned interval.
