This is quite interesting to me and I went through a couple of thoughts when I was watching this video. First that unfortunately we still have people that are outwardly prejudice in this modern age. It shows that we have not made as much progress as we thought. This was also after the election of President Obama so it shows that the idea that electing a black president did not mean we are in a post race society like many people claim. In fact this was right before the election of Trump, where we were starting to see that all of our so called racial progress we made as Americans was even more limited than we thought.
I think that this man represents how most Americans feel about race. I found it interesting as well that just by the language the man was using Heather McGhee knew he was talking about black Americans. While other racial groups in America are demonized she knew that for most white Americans the group they feared the most was black Americans, which is extremely problematic.
When we speak about racism I think that one concept that gets left out is fear. We say well why can people be so hateful and where does that hate come from? It comes through the fear of the unknown and the fear that life will change if equal rights and treatment is given to people of color in America. The process is like well if those people can get the same education, job, or quality of life as me than I will suffer. It is an extremely sad mentality that because one person is given a good quality of life that means that another person must suffer. I think this one reason that Americans are so fearful of each other when the only difference this man made concept of race.

I thought that when the prejudiced man said that he was afraid of his ‘fears’ coming true, I couldn’t help but think that his ‘fears’ were instilled in him because of the environment that he was raised in. From what I understand, he is using color blind racism since he even adds that he “doesn’t want to be forced to like people”. In addition, he even mentions that he wants to learn what he can do with his prejudices against these people so that he can “become a better American”. Especially since we live in a country where extreme racism and hate still exists, it is understandable that there are still people who really don’t want to interact with those of different ethnicities and cultures since they may have only been around one group of people when they grew up.
In the video, Heather McGee mentions that America is, “The most multi-racial, multi-ethnic, and wealthy democracy in the world.” Since there are so many different types of people in this country, everyone, no matter their race or background should be asking themselves how they can remove these prejudices they have towards others. This question is very important because there are many who are not conscious about these fears and prejudices they have and even don’t think they have them. By making people conscious about their prejudices and fears, they can actually acknowledge that they have them, which is the most powerful thing.
I thought that it was interesting how the word ‘fear’ was used because it just shows that people who are scared of those who are different create prejudices against them. Rather than coming together, people would rather be in fear, which shows how our society chooses to act when struck with fear. If acceptance was more stressed in school, children would not have to grow up being fearful of being different. This is something that must be changed and it is due to our broken school system that people have these fears.

Yo big ups to this dude for saying what he said. I don’t know nobody bold enough to tell somebody something like that. I think people will tell someone that they are prejudice but I never heard somebody say help me not do that. Its way easier to try and act like you not prejudice and racist by picking one thing you did or one person you know to make a point that you are not that way. That’s tough and if you been watching tv and instagram and stuff for the last few days this same stuff is coming up. People being afraid of people because they don’t know nothing about them and all they see if the worst of those people blasted to them. Two young black people have been killed in the last few months for this reason that the man on the phone said that he wanted help with. Its kind of scary to think how much power our thoughts have over the stuff that we do, it has power over who lives and dies if we choose to give in to it.
