Discussion Questions (there are two this week, you are only required to choose one. You may answer both if you like, or discuss something that isn’t mentioned in either of the questions. I’m trusting you here!)
1) Based on your reading of Give Me Liberty! and the Lecture/Lesson for this week, how do you assess the essays and speeches in “Protesting the First World War”? Keeping in mind that most of these speeches and essays were published/given during a period where it was politically (and legally!)dangerous to support them publicly, do you think that their words had a lasting impact on the population during this period? (Give Me Liberty! might be useful in supporting your answer, as would a knowledge of the “Protesting…” reading).
2) In what ways did immigration and the growth of the cities precipitate a new form of American society? What conditions gave rise to Americanization? To the Harlem Renaissance? Were they the same conditions, broadly speaking?
Need 2 citations from the reading!
