**Charles Holcombe, A History of East Asia: From the Origins of Civilization to
the Twenty-First Century, Cambridge University Press, Second Edition, 2017**
This book can be easily found online.

1. Korea’s experience during the early modern era (16th-19th century) was different from that of China and Japan. It is during this period that Korea earned a reputation as a “hermit country,” although all the three countries in East Asia adopted seclusion. What made Korea particularly hostile to the outside world (except China)? Please note the invasions by the Japanese in the late sixteenth century (you can get more information on the invasions online). While being closed to the outside, Chosŏn Korean underwent tremendous social and cultural changes, achieving a lot in those aspects. Please discuss what changes and achievements in Chosŏn Korean.

2. Now we get to the so-called “modern era” in East Asia, starting from Chapter 8. What was the situation in the world, especially in West Europe and America, in the early nineteenth century? What was China’s international trade like prior to the Opium War in 1840? How did the Chinese perceive international trade, the Westerners, and their culture? How did the Chinese treat foreign businessmen? Do you think all the conflicts over trade would ultimately lead to military clash between China and the West (the first one is the first Opium War in 1840-42)? Justify your opinion.

3. On top of the international crisis, Qing China also suffered from an unprecedentedly huge rebellion, the Taiping rebellion, in the mid-nineteenth century, 1850-1864. How was the civil war in China started? Although Hong Xiuquan’s story (how he became a Christian, God’s second son, and how he generated the largest rebellion in human history) was merely one man’s story, it reflects deep social crises accumulated by the mid-nineteenth century. What were those social problems? The rebels had good chances to topple the Qing dynasty, but they failed after a fourteen-year standoff with the Qing. Why did the Taiping rebellion fail?
