You will locate an article in your occupational field from a trade magazine, research journal, or other publication associated with your career. The article should address an issue of diversity in your occupational field. The issue could range from race and ethnicity, to gender, age, religion, or other topics from the textbook.
You will provide the instructor with a copy of the article, and after he approves it you may move on to the next step.
You will then write an extended essay (1,500 to 2,500 words, or about 3 to 5 pages) in which you critique the article.
A critique is a systematic analysis of strengths and weaknesses. You should explain the article’s main point(s) in your own words (what is the main idea or argument the article puts forward?). Then you will interrogate the article: does it present evidence to support its point? If so, do some research and “fact-check” the evidence. Does it hold up? Analyze the author’s line of reasoning. Do they commit any logical errors, make unfounded assumptions, or display any biases or prejudicial attitudes? Does your background knowledge of the field support the article’s assertions?
What is your overall opinion of the article? Close with a summary or concluding statement in which you concisely state whether you support the point made in the article, and explain how the article’s conclusions might affect the way you interact with people in your future career.
If you complete a rough draft of your essay, you will get it back from the instructor with comments and suggestions. If you wish to improve on the letter grade received on the rough draft, you may then rewrite the essay and submit a final draft to the instructor by the end of the semester.
On the extended essay paper, you will be graded primarily on how well you apply abstract concepts from our textbook to important real-world situations.
