Emotional and Social Development Writing Project: Argument Paper Instructions

This element will focus on contrasting 2 different viewpoints on a social issue regarding your topic. In the body of your paper, you will present each argument in a neutral, objective way, but will conclude with your viewpoint of which approach would be the best one when considering optimal developmental outcomes. The writing emphasis for this element is to be able to contrast arguments regarding social policies that impact your topic.

Students are required to find two sources on their own, though you may use the links below as well. One of the sources should be a news article.

As noted, a news story about the social policy is required, to show how these social policies are being currently viewed. A social policy can be a law, a school policy, or any ‘rule’ that has an impact on a number of people. You are not limited to using policies that impact US citizens.

You may use one of the news stories below or a different issue on your own. But be sure that there are 2 opposing views on your topic/issue, as you are required to present both sides of the argument.
1. You will introduce the policies (for example, what are they, where do they take place, who do they effect, and how do they relate to your construct?)
2. Present both sides’ views regarding your issue (taking a neutral approach in your presentations of each side, explaining what arguments that each side presents as a rationale in an objective manner). I suggest that each argument be presented separately in its own paragraph rather than trying to contrast them in the same paragraph.
3. Conclude with your opinion on your topic. While you may include emotions, your focus should be on rational arguments about which option will lead to the most optimal development for people.

I am giving some suggestions for topics/issues for these tracks, but do feel free to pursue other policies! There are MANY controversial policies, all across the world.
This seems to be one of the more difficult assignments for students in the past; feel free (as always) to have me help you brainstorm!
Do remember that if you use one of my links, you are still required to find 2 sources on your own!
