INSTRUCTIONS:
The concept of Emotional Intelligence (EI) has gained increasing exposure as a key trait of highly effective and successful leaders.
Five components of EI include:
1.)self-awareness
2.)self-regulation,
3.)motivation,
4.)empathy and
5.)social skill.
Reflect on a situation you have encountered in your own clinical practice setting that required a strong leadership intervention to resolve (e.g a patient complaint, communicating a difficult message, staff conflict). The situation can be one that you thought was handled very well by the leader or one you wish had been handled differently.
Determine whether or not there is evidence of each of the five components of EI present in the leader’s response.
Submit a 4 page, double spaced, scholarly paper that addresses the following questions:
First, describe the situation requiring a strong leadership intervention that you have encountered in your practice. The questions to be addressed regarding your chosen situation are:
Is there evidence of self-awareness in the leader’s response? If yes, describe why you believe this to be true; if no, discuss how the response could be changed to reflect self-awareness.
Does the response demonstrate self-regulation? Why or why not?
What was the underlying motivation on the part of the leader in the response presented?
Does the response demonstrate empathy to those involved in the situation? Why or why not?
Is there evidence of social skill in the posted response? If yes, describe why you believe this to be true; if no, discuss how the response could be changed to reflect social skill.
