Research papers will have a body of seven to ten (7-10) pages. The paper must also have an outline, and Works Cited page. (These pages are NOT considered as part of the body page count.) Their website also offers information about outlining; be sure to click through the three subsections regarding outlining. The order of pages in the paper is the outline, body of the paper, then the works cited page. These are all to be saved and sent to me as one document.
The final Works Cited page will contain seven to eight (7-8) sources. The sources will be derived from appropriate books, periodicals, etc., to denote a variety of sources used; you are expected to begin your research with the CTC library’s online databases. Each of the sources used in the Works Cited must be used at least once in the research paper.

You are to follow the MLA 8th edition format and documentation as described at the Purdue OWL site.
Use direct quotations sparingly (no more than 25% of the paper).
Be sure topic is sufficiently limited.

The level of diction should be formal (no slang, contractions, jargon, or technical terms without definition).

Your work on the research paper assignment is clearly progressing, but at 829 words, it’s significantly short of the approximate 2,500 words (7 to 10 pages) required of your final research paper. An important note: you should always check your work against the assignment requirements prior to submitting. You neglected to include an outline for your draft research paper. The formal outline differs from your working outline in that it precisely follows the structure of your research paper. You will need to provide a formal outline when submitting a scholarly paper for peer review prior to publication. You need to include such an outline here, too.

You are developing a solid literary paper., except of course, for length and outside sources to support your argument. Besides those, the quality of original thought in your paper is perhaps the most difficult requirement to address because The Picture of Dorian Gray has been thoroughly examined over the past 120 years. An overarching comment: you treat the characters as though they have some say in their actions and the outcomes. You should make it clear that it is the author who creates each character, each scene, and determines what occurs next. We can become so immersed in the story that we forget that it comes from the work of one person. You should comment on how well that one person, the author, has succeeded in creating the world, people, and events that exist within his novel.

Your research methodology cannot be evaluated nor is it appropriate to the task at present. Make sure that you have and use a minimum of seven authoritative sources to support and help prove your thesis. Your draft contains no outside sources. As you have quoted the subject novel, you have appropriately provided an entry for it on your Works Cited page–but be certain to cite the edition of the novel that you used as your source.

Your research paper needs to focus on how the novel demonstrates the assertions you identify in your thesis. You are on your way to meeting this requirement, but you need to provide more evidence in the form of quoted passages from the novel and authoritative outside sources to support your thesis and assertions. As you develop your thesis through the assertions, you should make greater use of the fiction terms and knowledge of literary devices that you studied.

When you write your entries to your Works Cited page, do not list a source on your Works Cited page unless you cite the source at least once within your paper. Second, when you share information or developments in the novel that helps prove your thesis, you should establish the credibility of a source the first time that source is used. Who is this? Why trust this source on this topic? You might mention the person’s experience in the area or what the person wrote as a way to establish credibility. For example: John Smith, a noted literary critic for the Ivy Literary Review, claims that… or John Smith in the Ivy Literary Review, claims that… In either instance, John Smith’s credibility about an literary topic is established. You should do the same the first time using a source as a way to show why your reader should trust the information, thus building your credibility and making your ideas more convincing to the reader.

As I’ve already noted regarding quotations from the novel, any statement about what a character thinks/believes/feels/realizes/understands/knows/etc. should be backed up with a quotation to prove it. All such internal thoughts/feelings are not necessarily ones that other readers may have seen in the characters like you did. Therefore, you need to prove it (prove your interpretation of what you think the character knows/feels/believes/etc.) by pointing to a specific quotation that proves it.
