Guidelines:
Your topic should utilize the knowledge you have learned so far this semester to analyze an issue where you beleve media ethics–whether related to news, entertainment, advertising, or public relations–comes into play. It may derive from a topic we’ve already considered that you feel desereves more research, illumination, etc. It could expand upon the use of classical theory or the SPJ Code of Ethics to make sound ethical decisions in a specific situation. For example, you might analyze news media coverage of an issue like immigration (just for instance) to determine a more ethical approach to covering the story. You might also critically analyze one or more Codes of Ethics used by journalists to determine if you think they could be amended to reflect today’s digital media platforms. Another idea might be to compare/contrast multiple versions of a news story and decide, based upon the criteria we’ve established, which is more or less ethical in its approach.
2. Your paper must include outside research, not only your personal opinions. These can come from on-line or library reseach, but must be from respected academic or industry sources (not wikopedia). If you are in doubt about what consistutes a “respected” source, ask. There is no set number of sources required, but certainly in the range of 3-4, with the more sources the better to support your major points.
3. How you cite your references is up to you, so long as you are consistent. I prefer what many of you are already doing in your weekly writing assignments: including “Works Cited” using MLA Style. You may also use APA Style. If you are uncertain of either, please look them up on-line or ask for clarification.
4. The length should be in the range of 8-10 double-spaced pages. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence structure, and organization into paragraphs for clarity are all expected.
5. You are GRADUATE students, so I expect strong research, concise writing, cogent argument, and both critical and CREATIVE thinking. If I wanted to assign a topic, I could and would, but I want you to THINK decide on a topic now that you will both enjoy while researching and learn from when writing!
