Case No. 1: Ms. Miller

You are the social worker at a trauma center at a large urban medical center. Ms. Miller was seen at the center, having had an accident involving a head-on collision between two motor vehicles. The other driver was not hurt, but Ms. Miller was injured and admitted to the hospital for treatment.

The next day, when you are completing Ms. Miller’s trauma assessment, you discover that she had a positive toxicity screen for both alcohol and methamphetamines. She had shared with you that she was a school bus driver for elementary school children and was supposed to have worked the previous afternoon. Timing showed that Ms. Miller had arrived at the trauma center intoxicated that previous morning and had the accident not occurred, she would have gone to work with alcohol and drugs in her system.

What is the ethical dilemma, and if you are the social worker, what would you do?
