Section 13: Anguish
Forlornness is another word for ‘abandonment’. Since God does not exist we are abandoned to our own choices. Also, there is no Platonic Form of Good Choices that exists eternally and universally to which we can refer to assist us in our decision-making.
What do you think of the idea that when we choose we choose for everyone?
If we decide to do a certain thing it that means we value whatever effects our choices bring. Anguish comes to us when we have made a decision and in so choosing we would have everyone choose this as well. Like some adult chastising you remarking, “What if everyone did that?” Each choice is chosen for all humanity. If we value it then we would want everyone to also value it similarly.
Section 13: Freedom and Responsibility
There is another definition of forlorn/abandonment here.
We discussed in class some weeks ago the idea of freedom and determination in Your Move: The Maze of Free Will by Galen Strawson (145).
No fate, no grand divine plan, no purpose other that what we choose.
We cannot help but choose and we are responsible for all our choices. There are no excuses.

Sartre reverses our usual way of thinking about acting on our feelings.
How we interpret ‘signs’ is also a choice.
Our interpretations show what we value.
We decide our being by choosing.
Section 17:
What does Sartre mean here about despair?
Why can’t we will anything we want?
The last sentence of section 17 means not that we should be hopeless but that we should act with disinterest, that is, without expectations.
