Final

For this exam, you will answer three out of the four writing prompts. You are essentially creating a guide for proper intercultural communication based on the following topics. Imagine this guide is for someone who has never done any intercultural communication. This person will need the information in your guide to be a successful communicator. Your grade depends on your ability to construct a thorough, detailed guide that this person can use.
Don’t forget that each answer requires a thorough discussion of both class concepts and examples that demonstrate those concepts. Each answer should be at least two pages in length, double spaced with 12 point font.

1. Reviewing Chapters 7 and 8, consider the crucial role of verbal and nonverbal communication. For your first prompt, write a guide that explains two verbal concepts and two nonverbal concepts in great detail.Explain what these concepts are and what they mean for intercultural communication. Then explain a situation in which each concept plays a part. You can base this on your own experience and use your culture, however you wish to define it, as an example.

2. Looking now to Chapter 9, think about how code usage and persuasive appeals vary across cultures. First, explain what a person needs to know in order to make an effective persuasive message across cultures. What concepts does this person need to consider. (Choose at least four you consider to be important.) After you discuss the concepts, I want you to give an example of a persuasive appeal. (This could be a sales message, a political message, or any other type of persuasive message.) Using your culture, or a culture you know a great deal about, explain how knowing those four concepts will help a persuader make the most effective message possible to that culture.

3. With Chapter 10, think about interpersonal relationships. First, explain the nature of interpersonal relationships, and choose at least two of the concepts regarding relationships. Secondly, explain the concept of face, including what it means to lose, save, and maintain face. After that, give an example of how someone from outside your culture might need to understand these concepts in order to have a successful relationship with someone in your culture. Not only explain how the concepts and dynamics work, but be sure you explain how the concepts of face, saving face, and maintaining face work as well.

4. This last prompt takes a look at Chapters 11 and 12. Chapter 11 mentions three contexts: health care, education, and business. Chapter 12 talks about intercultural contact, the ethics of competence, and the perils and prospects of competence. Choose one of the contexts from Chapter 11 and apply one concept from each of those Chapter 12 categories. (In other words, you will explain how one concept each from intercultural contact, the ethics of competence, and the perils and prospects of competence applies to either the health care, education, or business context.) As usual, after you explain how the concepts work in one of those contexts, give an example from your or another culture that demonstrates the concept in action. This example can be of a positive or of a negative interaction.
