THE LITERARY TEXTS I WOULD LIKE DISCUSSED ARE “CRAZY BRAVE” BY JOY HARJO AND “THIS WOUND IS A WORLD” BY BILLY-RAY BELCOURT
Formatting: Double-spaced, 1 inch margins, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font
Length: 7-10 pages double-spaced
Bibliographic Documentation: MLA parenthetic in-text citations and “Works Cited” page
Write a 7-10 page literary analysis paper that provides a developed, thesis-driven argument. For this paper you will have to choose one or two literary text(s) we’ve read this semester, develop an argument, and support your thesis with evidence from the literature of your choice.
Again, the goal in each paper is to develop your own original argument about a text, rather than to repeat what we already have discussed in class. By “original,” I mean attending to questions, issues, and/or sections of the text that we have not addressed. Your paper need not say something that no one else has ever said; it simply needs to strike out in a direction that we have not covered with respect to the text(s) about which you’re writing, which can include ideas and problems we discussed with respect to other texts. Ask yourself what interests you about the text(s), and use that answer as a way of guiding you to your own interpretation.
Things to Note:
Your paper must have a thesis statement.
You should quote/paraphrase sections of the novel, short story, or poems. There is no minimum or maximum number of citations needed; just make sure you have enough to support your thesis.
You must have a Works Cited page, which does not count as a page of writing.
Various chapters we read in Lenses will be useful to you when writing this paper–especially the “Literary Research” chapter pgs. 115-126 and the “Example Poem Analysis” chapter pgs. 127-130 (if you plan to write about poetry)
