Prompt:
The final paper gives you an opportunity to evaluate and assess the various ethical theories we have studied during the semester.
First, select three ethical theories from Part II of the book. (see the pictures)Introduce the major thinkers for each ethical theory, discuss the key concepts, moral principles and claims in each. Make sure to discuss how each theory determines what is morally good/bad and right/wrong. Discuss the advantages and difficulties that arise in each theory.
Second, identify which ethical theory you find most convincing amongst the ones you have discussed. Construct an argument why this theory is most convincing for you. Be sure to use the four criteria for assessing moral theories found on pages 107 to 110 of the textbook. How do the theories compare to each other when evaluated together based on the four criteria? Which one fares the best? Why?
Third, introduce one moral dilemma that emerges in your area of study or intended profession. You can use examples from case studies in the book if you have difficulty coming up with a moral dilemma. You are not allowed to discuss a case study you have already written about in a previous case study assignment. Discuss how the ethical theory you have chosen would respond to the moral dilemma. You are not allowed to discuss a case study you have already written about in a previous case study assignment. Discuss how the ethical theory you have chosen would respond to the moral dilemma. Show how it would resolve the problem. Clearly connect the solution with moral principles in the ethical theory and how it applies to the different descriptive claims that arise in the moral dilemma. Also note how the other two ethical theories might respond to the problem.
Conclude by reflecting on the ethical theories you have discussed, noting the strengths and weaknesses of each theory in addressing the dilemma. Restate why you are most convinced by the ethical theory you chose and how it compares to the other theories.
