Gryphon Critical Thinking Essay

In this paper, 1200 words, you are to argue whether Ms F is a “good teacher.” To so you will in
the opening paragraph have to define the characteristics of a good teacher and argue their
validity. You do this after introducing to the reader the story, author and plot. The paragraph
then leads the reader to a thesis, the paper’s main idea, the point the paper is trying to
convince me of. Remember to enclose the short story title in quotes, i.e., “Gryphon.”
Remember too that the opening paragraph does not deal with specifics. It does not start
arguing its thesis. It only states it.

Some helpful hints.
1. Do not organize your paper chronologically, that is, do not approach the story by analyzing scene 1 then scene 2 and so on from the plot’s beginning to end. Organize the paper by ideas.
2. Make sure that in the paper you explain how that trait, how that particular teaching skill makes one a better learner. You don’t stop when you establish that, for example, she holds the student’s interest. You must explain how doing that makes the student a better learner. It may be obvious but make the reasoning explicit.
3. Read through the story and analyze it for its function. Assuming Ms F is the good guy, at least in Tommy’s eyes, identify what’s going on in that scene that shows the students are engaged and learning. Then organize the scenes by category. For example, if you were to say that a good teacher is able to empathize with her students, go through the story and cherry pick every scene that illustrates that point.
4. Use scenes to support your ideas by explaining how that scene illustrates it.
5. Remember to connect each paragraph to the thesis. That means you should be able to tell me how this paragraph helps develop your thesis.
6. When referring to story, use the present tense. You lose a half a grade if you use the past tense.
7. You will lose a half a grade if the paper is not properly formatted. For example, the paper is double spaced. No extra spaces. If there are, open the paragraph window and make sure the before and after settings are set to zero. The header appears on every page, the heading only on the first.
8. Remember, plot, the what happens, isn’t introduced for the sake of telling the reader what happens. Any plot introduced is used as a basis for making a point.
9. Every paragraph functions to develop the paper’s thesis.
10. Each paragraph has a controlling idea. Every sentence in that paragraph develops that idea and that idea only. If another idea is introduced, it either deserves its own paragraph and development or it should be deleted.
11.To analyze means to break the whole into parts. Stories consist of scenes and parts and elements. Use whatever literary terms apply. Identify the conflict, the protagonist and antagonist, the theme(s), foil, flat characters and find out how they function in the story. A good critical essay uses as much of them as it can to support and develop its thesis.
12. Follow the rules of capitalization and punctuation. Know what comma splices, a run ons, fragments, subject verb agreement errors, verb form errors, and tense consistency errors are and MAKE SURE they do not appear in your paper. Chronic grammatical errors will reduce your grade. This you do once you are satisfied with content. Get help if needed.
