The role and treatment of women in the play—What purpose do the women serve in this
play? What is Hamlet’s demeanor when he interacts with the women? Does Shakespeare
use the female characters to make a social statement about how women were treated by
society?
The essay should contain a minimum of five (5) pages and a maximum of six (6) pages.
Your essay should have a clear and focused thesis statement and strong supporting paragraphs
that use plenty of details to develop and prove your thesis. You must use at least three secondary
sources in your essay (the play does not count as a secondary source; however, you should still
have an entry for the play on your Works Cited page as you will use information from the play to

for this course. The UA-PTC library Web site (http://www.uaptc.edu/library) provides great
information on conducting research, avoiding plagiarism, evaluating sources, citing sources, etc.
I strongly advise you to look at each link in this section as this is very valuable information.
Please remember that the strength and clarity of your thesis statement and supporting paragraphs
are in part a function of the proper use of grammar, the proper spelling of words, and the appropriate use of punctuation. You should search the UA-PTC databases for literary criticism. You will find these databases on
the following page: http://libguides.pulaskitech.edu/databasesatoz. The best databases to use for
this essay are Literature Resource Center and Literature Online (LION). You might also try
looking at psychology journals (in the “P” section) if you are writing about madness/insanity.
Some of my former students have had luck finding information about Hamlet in those journals. You may also use the Internet to search for secondary sources. However, you are limited to one
source from the Internet; the other sources must be from the UA-PTC databases. If you use
the Internet, you need to use Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/) as your search engine.
That way, you are sure to get articles that are more scholarly than those you would get by using
Yahoo, Bing, Google, or other search engines.
