The second case study paper for THL 216 provides an opportunity for students to do more in-depth research, analysis, and writing on one of the issues we’ve addressed in this second part of our semester. Your paper should be at least a full 5 pages in length. You may write up to 7 pages. It is due Friday, April 17 at 11:59 p.m. via Canvas.
Your task is to find a case related to one of the remaining issues we have studied since mid-term:
War and Peace
Healthcare
Either beginning of life (abortion or IVF) – or –
End of life (end-of-life care; physician-assisted suicide/euthanasia)
Sexual Ethics
Marriage
This assignment provides guidelines for students as they research and complete their papers.
Finding a Case Study
Decide whether you want to write on a case study related to war and peace; beginning or end of life healthcare issue; sexual ethics; or marriage.
Choose one of the case studies in the Stivers text and do a more in-depth analysis of the case, using guidance from Zalot & Guevin and the Stivers commentary.
Follow the guidelines for the paper below.
Guidelines for your paper
The problem being addressed
What is the moral issue you are examining in the case you are using? Why is it a moral issue? This is worth 10 points; your explanation should go into some detail.
Background on the case
What is going on in the case you are evaluating? What are some relevant facts to be considered? This is worth 10 points; go into sufficient detail to warrant 10 points.
Methodology Employed
What principles of moral theology are relevant to this issue and helpful in resolving it? Explain the biblical or theological foundations of the principle and then explain how the principle(s) apply to the issue. You must use one or both of our texts and/or the Bible as sources for this part of the paper.
What are some arguments that might be made that go against the Catholic/Christian position?
The above guidelines are where I am looking for you to demonstrate an engagement with current events in the context of social justice.
Conclusion
State what you think the appropriate response to the case study would be for a practicing Christian and what principles would be most important. Then state your position on the case and support it with good reasons.
General Guidelines
The usual expectations with regard to written work are in force. If you use information from any of our textbooks or readings or from other sources, you must PARAPHRASE and you must cite the source from which you have paraphrased using Chicago style. All quotes from the texts or other sources must be cited and a works cited list or bibliography must be included or you are at risk of receiving a ZERO (0) on this assignment. That means using quotation marks when needed, paraphrasing as appropriate, and providing citations (including page numbers) in the body of the text and a REFERENCE/WORKS CITED list at the end. You do not need quotation marks when you paraphrase but you must cite the source. You must cite all ideas that come from the authors of any materials you use – not just quotes from the text. If ideas and quotes come from the same page, you can put the citation at the end of the paragraph.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you plagiarize on this paper you will not be given the opportunity to redo the paper. You will receive a zero (0) on the paper and you risk a report to the academic dean that you have engaged in academic misconduct.
That being said, if you find yourself in trouble with too heavy a course and exam load, come talk to me. Do not cut corners by plagiarizing. This can only hurt you. It cannot help.
