Directions: Historical Literature Analysis Essay
During the course of the semester you will write five (you choose which of the eight weeks of the semester to do one of the five papers) compositions drawing on the Historical Literature Essay located in the ASSIGNED READING links and the syllabus. The intent of this assignment is threefold: (1) to involve the student in various historical debates; (2) to further develop critical thinking skills; (3) and foster writing proficiency.
Essay submissions must cover the reading assigned for that particular week. (See the essays linked above.) No late assignments will be accepted—if you do not submit an essay covering a particular week’s reading assignment during the period that it is scheduled, then that reading assignment has passed. All papers are to be uploaded to Turnitin.com. See date dates and times for the papers on the Turnitin.com site for the course. No papers will be accepted via email.
Be absolutely clear that your compositions must be based on the Historical Literature Essay readings as found on the Canvas site for each week. There are also Textbook and Primary Source Readings assigned each week, but you are to write on the Historical Literature Essay readings alone.
The format you must follow for your composition is quite specific. It is your responsibility to comply with said format. If you fail to follow directions, you will receive no credit for your composition. You must write a traditional composition: introduction, body, and conclusion. Introductory paragraph: in your first paragraph, you must provide the name of the author(s) and title of the essay that you are discussing. Following that you will briefly summarize the thesis (a position or proposition that a person advances and offers to maintain by argument) offered by the author. You may also use the introductory paragraph to briefly describe the period that the author is covering. The body of your composition will detail and analyze the main points discussed in the essay that support the thesis. Complete your essay with a proper conclusion: a complete paragraph that reinforces the points made in the body of the paper as they relate to the broader thesis offered by the historian.
When composing your essay keep these key points in mind: 1) Identify the thesis of the essay 2) Do not simply summarize the material. 3) Your task is to explain why the essay’s thesis is important. 4) Analyze the content of the essay: explain and interpret the information covered in the piece. 5) Also, situate the events or themes covered in the essay within the context of the period being discussed. 6) And explain the greater implications of the specific event or theme.
The essay must be single-spaced and between 800 and 1000 words in length. One-inch margins: top and bottom, left and right. Do not place your name, course, or date on the essay; the Turnitin site does that automatically. Do not overload your paper with quotes. Do not plagiarize (present someone else’s ideas as your own). Note each paper due date and time is listed in the syllabus above and on the Turnitin.com site.
Since we are working from a common text, there is no reason to cite the text or page number of material used or direct quotes.
Make note of points outlined in the below “checklist”. Failure to comply with elements identified in “checklist” may result in losing points for your composition.
