v Standard paper format: Use Microsoft Word, Times New Roman & 12-point size font, 1-inch margins all around, and MLA citation.
v Make an argument and defend it using evidence, don’t simply “report” the history.

Ø Argument: 25% Does your response have a clear, singular, specific point that answers the question?
Ø Evidence: 25% Do you use sufficient relevant evidence to defend your argument?
Ø Organization: 25% Does your response have logical paragraph and content structures?
Ø Clarity: 25% Is your prose efficient, crisp, and polished, free of excessive passive voice or distracting spelling or grammatical errors?
Exam Questions:
· An insightful young historian has argued that slavery was not just a southern institution but also a national and international one. Is this historian correct or not? How were northerners and foreigners tied to slavery and its major changes in the United States between 1790 and 1860? Be sure to address the role of cotton in your response.
· Analyze and describe the influence of Manifest Destiny and on the U.S. in the early nineteenth century. What were the most important causes of conflict with Mexico and native people? Was reconciliation possible or was war and conflict inevitable?
Respond to the questions by creating a thesis/argument and supporting it with points using evidence form the textbook. Use quotes no more than one sentence long, and make sure that the response is your own voice. Plagiarism will get you a zero, no exceptions (refer to the policy on Scholastic Dishonesty and Plagiarism – link in syllabus).
