History 3322
This semester, there a 1,000 word writing assignment on Daniel Walker Howe’s What God Hath Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848. This paper is worth 10% of your final grade.
After reading Howe’s What God Hath Wrought, what do you think was the single most significant development during the period between 1815 and 1848? Write a well-developed 1,000 word essay in which you identify the issue you have chosen for your paper, explain why you chose this issue, and analyze the event in terms of cause and effect. Why did this development occur, and why was it so significant to U.S. history during this time period? You should base your essay entirely on What God Hath Wrought, providing parenthetical citations (for instance: Howe, p. 394) to identify any direct quotations or other specific references to the text.
General guidelines:
Due Date: The paper is due December 4, 2020, by 11:59 P.M. It should be submitted BOTH (1) as an attachment formatted in MS Word using the assignment feature in Blackboard and (2) pasted into the assignment template (as a backup in case the attachment cannot be opened).
Length: 1,000 words each.
Format: Double-spaced; 1-inch margins; 12 point Times New Roman font.
Pay attention to spelling and grammar, as these will impact your grade!
Do not include a title page. Include your name, the course number (History 3324), and the date in the upper right hand corner of the paper’s header. You may choose a title for your paper; the title should appear centered also in the paper header. When you first refer to Howe’s book in the text, provide a full citation, such as: After reading Daniel Walker Howe’s What God Hath Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2007), I conclude that…. After this initial citation, all other references to the book should be parenthetical, as noted above.
I expect Howe to be your main source; if you follow the instructions above, no other citations are necessary. If you do use any other sources, then remember to cite those sources; avoid all suspicion of plagiarism!
